Wellington Bake Club 2011

Bake Club 2011 - Will you rise to the challenge?

Sponsored by

Over 70 Bake Clubs fired up their ovens, dusted off their baking trays, and whipped their clubs into shape for the five weeks that was Wellington Bake Club 2011.

At the Wellington Bake Off 2011 things sure heated up with our guest judges tasting over 50 individual cupcakes!

The inaugural Best Baker was Jinesse Taylor from her Bake Club The Magnficent Mixers, a group of friends.  Jinesse's winning cupcake was a stem ginger cupcake with lemon frosting and gingerbread men. Get the recipe

Jinesse won $1000 worth of groceries from New World and $1000 worth of bake ware from Kirkcaldie & Stains. Her club, The Magnificent Mixers, won a Fisher & Paykel appliance to the value of $2500 (including GST).  Congratulations!

There were plenty of other winners, finalists and spot prizes. Stay tuned while we compile the list of all the winners in the next few days.

Yes, the final challenge we have for you is Cupcakes!

We will be using the same judging criteria as the Bake Club voting slips. Flavour, Texture, Appearance, and inclusion of Wellington Ingredients (a minimum of one, but for full points you need two or more).

The judges you need to impress are; Ruth Pretty from Ruth Pretty Catering, Sarah Meikle from Visa Wellington On a Plate, Ondine from Martha's Pantry, and a Cake Decorating champion Rania Dijlawati from New World Metro.

A few rules:
1. What are cupcakes? Individual sized portions usually baked in a muffin tin with a cake like texture. The cupcake mould is lined with a crimped paper or foil cup, and the finished product is attractively decorated.

2. You need bring nine cupcakes and display them on your own serving plate (the plate can be a maximum of 40cm long x 40cm wide). Plus bring a smaller plate to serve an individual cupcake (part of the nine) for the judges table.

3. The judging will be done blind (unnamed, not blind-folded). So you need to fill in and print off the name cards for both your plates and bring them with you.

4. You need to be at the venue, registered and have your cupcakes displayed by 5.30pm. So get there as close to 5pm as possible.

How to whip your Bake Club into shape

  1. You need to register by Wednesday 13 July to take part. Your first bake challenge is issued Thursday 14th July.
  2. A Bake Club must have at least four members (there is no maximum limit on the number of home bakers per club), and a baker may be part of as many clubs as they wish - which may be dangerous on the waist line.
  3. Nominate your Bake Master (if you’re reading this – it’s probably you). This person will send out reminders before baking day. And most importantly keep track of the scores.
  4. Each week at 9am on Thursday a baking challenge will be issued – baking needs to be baked and judged by the end of  the following Wednesday (and scores tallied by the Bake Master).
  5. Everyone in the Bake Club must bake on the same day once a week for three weeks (the club determines the Bake Day best suited to its members). If a Bake Club member misses a Bake Day, it is up to the Bake Master to decide if they will change the system to a highest average rate (giving the missing member no disadvantage).
  6. The tasters (anyone with taste buds will do, including the Bake Club members) rate each bake against a simple form provided (tasters must sample and rate all members' baking). Tasters can be varied week to week.
  7. Baking is judged on taste, appearance, flavour, and inclusion of Wellington ingredients (a minimum of one Wellington ingredient is required per bake).
  8. The two bakers within your Bake Club with the highest total scores after three weeks, progress to week four.
  9. At week four the slate is cleared and it’s all down to the home baker who gains the most points for that one bake. The top scorer represents their club at the Wellington Bake Off 2011 event during Visa Wellington On a Plate on August 18th. Prizes and glory up for grabs!

And don’t forget to snap a photo of your baking each week and enter in the weekly Best Bake photo competition on Facebook. There are heaps of prizes, including New World Gift Cards, cookbooks and restaurant vouchers. Keep an eye on Facebook.com/WellingtonOnaPlate for details. You don’t need to be in a Bake Club to take part.
